What causes ice dams?
Ice dams are caused by improper attic ventilation and/or inadequate insulation in the attic. The heat from inside the structure melts the snow on the roof. The water then freezes when it reaches the roof edges. As it continues to melt, it pools behind the ice dam and seeps under your shingles. When this happens, most of the water is hidden in the attic and inside the walls. We use infrared cameras to find the water and remove it.

Ice dams can also be caused by the way the roof valleys and the walls meet. To fix this, you have to replace the roofing in that area with rubber roofing and/or rebuild the roof pitch in that area. We have seen this often on newer homes with multiple pitches and gables. The architect didn’t foresee the snow accumulating in that area, but we can fix it.   

How do we remove your ice dam?
First, we cover the ice dam with calcium chloride and give it time to melt the ice. Second, we gently chop the ice dam into pieces, except for in the gutters where it must be melted.

We can do a free evaluation/estimate to determine what is causing the ice to build up. We may need to increase your attic insulation and/or add more attic venting.
